“Persecutions” being the punchline. I wonder if Jesus did have a sense of humor and kept his followers in stitches at times.

I think so. Another example is “Don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” That’s funny (especially if delivered with gestures), but it’s become so iconic that we miss it.
