Fun fact: I once read a Frank Peretti kids’ book in which this well actually is the literal entrance to hell. There was a whole explanation and back story and everything.
In general, if locals tell you a hole leads to hell — or has demons imprisoned within it — I would say stay away.

That first one, with the well of hell, was the only one I ever got a chance to read. I remember thinking that Peretti had really set a task for himself by making the literal jaws of hell, the main adventure in the series’ FIRST book.
